Description

STORIES OF RACE AND BIAS IN OUR TOWNS - A CONVERSATION SERIES IN THREE PARTS

Join CURE for three facilitated conversations in a neighbor's home. Part of our "intimate gatherings" series.

Come to 1. Come to 2. Come to all 3.

  • Examine systemic or institutional racism through the lens of a local story.

  • Explore where we are on the continuum of understanding racism and how our implicit bias influences us in our daily lives

  • Learn how we unknowingly contribute to racism and practice confronting our own assumptions

On May 19th: WHAT OUR LATINX NEIGHBORS ARE FACING

Jirandy Martinez will join us to examine the many issues that the growing Latinx community faces locally as well as explore our misconceptions regarding the immigrant community. Who makes up the immigrant community and what is our awareness of their struggles?

On June 9th: REDLINING - PAST & PRESENT

Jountel White will lead a discussion about redlining, the discriminatory practice of denying loans, etc in a specific geographic neighborhood based on its racial or ethnic composition. What is the history of redlining in our community and how does it impact our bias about home ownership and our school communities?

On July 9th: EVERYONE IS WELCOME HERE, RIGHT?

Jountel will return to discuss how people from different races and backgrounds experience our schools differently. We will look at leraning and socializing in our schools from diverse student perspectives. Explore the discomfort of dealing with conversations of race & racism in the schools.

Come to one, two or all three: May 19, June 9 and July 9th. Conversations appropriate for children ages 13 and up. Other questions? Contact us at learnwithcure@gmail.com.
